New UL research records decline in concussion and injury rates among players
A NEW study by UL researchers found a decline in concussion and injury rates among players since the IRFU lowered the legal tackle height at amateur level.
The study explored data from the Irish Rugby Injury Surveillance project, and was the first to explore the impact of the rule change on the schools, men’s, and women’s amateur game.
The findings reveal a 38 per cent decrease in tackle-event concussion rates in men’s community rugby, alongside an 18 per cent reduction in overall match injuries.
A 63 per cent decrease in concussions and a 30 per cent decrease in injuries was observed in the women’s game, and a 19 per cent decrease in injuries was noted in schools rugby.
