Criminal and internal investigations launched after off-duty cop shoots man in San Pedro during domestic disturbance

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have launched simultaneous criminal and internal investigations after an off-duty police officer, identified as PC Keenan Yearwood shot Maverick Fuentes during an alleged domestic disturbance in San Pedro Town. The incident occurred on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at an apartment building where the officer reportedly resides. Police said the officer was returning home when he encountered an ongoing domestic altercation in a common area of the building. Police report that Yearwood reportedly attempted to de-escalate the situation, however, Fuentes’ common-law wife, Delia Martinez, claims that Yearwood entered their house without consent. Martinez claims Yearwood entered the home and attacked Fuentes, however, police report that Yearwood attempted to detain Fuentes but was attacked by both Fuentes and Martinez. The officer then reportedly drew his personally licensed firearm and discharged one round, striking Fuentes in the leg. Martinez claims it was at this point that Yearwood called in for police backup, though police report that Yearwood had called for police assistance prior to entering the home. Fuentes was airlifted from the island for further medical treatment. According to Martinez, Fuentes suffered a broken leg due to the gunshot. The officer also sought medical attention, though the extent of his injuries has not been disclosed. Police have confiscated the Yearwood’s firearm and recovered the expended shell casing. Martinez also told Breaking Belize News that during the scuffle, Yearwood dropped a fully loaded magazine, which she later found and turned in to CIB. No charges have been brought against anyone at this stage as investigators work to establish the full sequence of events and obtain statements from the woman and other potential witnesses.
