International News: Teen dies after fountain collapses during Spain’s World Cup celebrations
By Zoila Palma: A 13-year-old boy was killed and two other young people were injured after part of a fountain collapsed during Spain’s World Cup victory celebrations in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca province, early this morning, BBC reports.
Emergency services said the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time when several youths climbed onto the Árbol Gordo fountain to celebrate Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.
Local reports indicated that part of the structure gave way under the weight of the crowd.
The injured included one child who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.
Emergency responders, firefighters, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene, while authorities later requested psychological support for the victim’s family as an investigation into the incident got underway.
