International Moon Day celebrates human achievement and the future of space exploration
By Zoila Palma: International Moon Day is being observed today to commemorate one of humanity’s greatest achievements — the first human landing on the Moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
The United Nations General Assembly established the annual observance in 2021 through Resolution 76/76 on international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.
The day highlights the achievements of countries involved in lunar exploration. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation as nations continue developing new missions to explore Earth’s closest celestial neighbor.
The 2026 observance follows the historic Artemis II mission, which saw four astronauts complete a journey around the Moon and return safely to Earth.
The mission, carried out in April, marked one of the farthest human spaceflights ever completed and reinforced the message that global cooperation can help achieve extraordinary milestones.
