The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that active monsoon conditions are likely to persist across northwestern, eastern and northeastern India over the next six to seven days, increasing the risk of additional floods, landslides and river overflows. Heavy rainfall has also affected neighbouring Nepal. Since the monsoon began in mid-June, Nepalese authorities have reported 27 deaths linked to floods, landslides, heavy rain and lightning. One person remains missing and 69 others have been injured. Several major highways, including the main route connecting Kathmandu with Nepal’s southern plains, have been blocked by landslides, disrupting travel and the movement of goods, officials said. Authorities in both India and Nepal urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid flood-prone locations and follow evacuation orders where necessary as rescue operations continued. The annual southwest monsoon, which typically runs from June to September, is vital for agriculture across South Asia but frequently causes deadly floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions.
