The public can vote for the design of a new National Museum but there’s a catch

The government is asking the public to vote on the design for Ecuador’s new National Museum to be built at Carolina Park in Quito. There’s a catch, however. The public vote will only count 15% in the final decision, with the choice of a “panel of experts” weighing 85%. The design for the new National Museum of Ecuador submitted by the SANAA+A0-CPA-JHS team. See the other two finalist designs below. The new competition follows the rejection by Ecuador Infrastructure Minister Roberto Luque of the winning design selected by another panel of experts from the national College of Architects. Luque made his decision following public criticism of the original winner submitted by Campo Baeza + MAODA, an Ecuadorian-Spanish design team. “The proposed design for the museum is not what Ecuador needs,” Luque said in throwing out Campo Baeza + MAODA. “We have listened to what the people are saying and we agree with you,” Luque said. “We will reopen the competition with the designs presented by the other finalists.” Four of the top ten finalists in the original competition withdrew their applications, complaining of the “politicization” of the selection process. Of the remaining entries, Luque said experts had chosen three as finalists. To vote for the museum design, go the government website.
