Iran’s Khamenei warns against division amid ongoing contacts with Washington
Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei has called for national unity, saying Iran’s adversaries are seeking to exploit internal divisions after failing to achieve their objectives through confrontation.
According to Reuters, Khamenei said enemies of Iran are now attempting to weaken public solidarity and social cohesion by fostering discord inside the country.
He warned that any actions that create pessimism, disappointment or distrust among the public would ultimately benefit Iran’s opponents.
The remarks were delivered in a message marking the anniversary of the death of Ruhollah Khomeini and during a major Shiite religious commemoration.
Khamenei’s comments come as tensions between Iran and the United States persist despite ongoing diplomatic contacts aimed at reducing the risk of renewed conflict in the region.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently said negotiations with Tehran were progressing well and indicated that he would be willing to meet Khamenei in the future. Trump also expressed optimism that a broader agreement could be reached, although Iranian officials have maintained that substantial differences remain.
The latest statements follow weeks of indirect and direct contacts between Washington and Tehran after military tensions in the Gulf and broader Middle East raised concerns about a wider regional conflict. Both sides have publicly supported diplomacy, but continue to disagree on sanctions, security arrangements and the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Political debate over Iran policy has also intensified in Washington. The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved a measure seeking to limit the president’s authority to launch military action against Iran without congressional approval. Although the measure is unlikely to become law, it reflected growing concern among lawmakers about the possibility of another military confrontation in the region.
