U.S. military rejects Iranian claim of attack on American vessel in Gulf waters
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has rejected Iran’s claim that its forces targeted an American military vessel in the Gulf region, dismissing the allegation as false amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to Al Jazeera, CENTCOM said in a statement that Iranian reports about an attack on a U.S. vessel near Iranian territorial waters in the Gulf of Oman were untrue.
“Iran is lying,” CENTCOM said, without providing additional details about the location or activities of U.S. naval assets in the area.
Iranian officials had earlier claimed that their forces targeted a U.S. military vessel as it approached Iranian waters in the Gulf of Oman, an assertion that was widely circulated by Iranian state-linked media.
The exchange comes despite ongoing diplomatic contacts between the two countries. U.S. President Donald Trump recently said negotiations with Iran were progressing “very well” and suggested a potential agreement could be reached in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Abbas Araghchi has said communication between Tehran and Washington remains open but acknowledged that no significant breakthrough has yet been achieved in the negotiations.
The latest dispute follows weeks of military and political tensions in the Gulf after clashes involving U.S. and Iranian forces and concerns over regional security. Although a fragile ceasefire remains in place, both sides have continued to exchange accusations regarding military activities and alleged violations.
The political debate in Washington has also intensified. The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved a measure aimed at limiting Trump’s authority to launch military action against Iran without congressional approval. The vote, supported by Democrats and several Republicans, reflected growing concerns about the risk of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
