Trump says Mojtaba Khamenei gives final approval in U.S.-Iran talks
U.S. President Donald Trump said ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran are progressing positively and suggested he could eventually meet Mojtaba Khamenei, whom he described as playing a key role in approving decisions related to the talks.
Speaking on the “Pod Force One” podcast, Trump said he had never met Mojtaba Khamenei but claimed reports suggested he was involved in providing final approval for negotiations with the United States.
“At some point I will probably meet Mojtaba Khamenei,” Trump said, adding that Iran had accepted it would not possess nuclear weapons and that developments surrounding the country were moving in a positive direction.
The comments come as Washington and Tehran continue discussions aimed at extending a fragile ceasefire and preventing renewed military confrontation following recent hostilities between the two countries.
Iranian officials have maintained that diplomatic contacts with the United States remain open, although they have repeatedly said significant differences remain over sanctions, security guarantees and the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump’s remarks also follow a recent vote in the U.S. House of Representatives supporting a measure to limit presidential authority to launch military action against Iran without congressional approval. The vote, backed by Democrats and several Republicans, reflected growing concern in Congress about the risk of another major conflict in the Middle East.
Although the measure is unlikely to become law because Trump is expected to veto it, political analysts say it highlights increasing debate in Washington over U.S. policy toward Iran and the limits of presidential war powers.
The United States and Iran have exchanged conflicting public assessments of the negotiations in recent weeks. While Trump has expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, Iranian officials have stressed that progress remains limited and that any deal must address Tehran’s core demands.
A successful agreement could help stabilize the region after months of tension involving Iran, Israel and U.S. forces, while failure to secure a deal could increase the risk of renewed military escalation across the Middle East.
