U.S. House votes to limit Trump’s Iran war powers
The U.S. House of Representatives voted to limit President Donald Trump from using military force against Iran without congressional authorization, marking a rare rebuke from members of his own Republican Party.
According to Fox News, lawmakers approved the measure by 215 votes to 208, with all Democrats present supporting the resolution and four Republicans joining them.
The resolution seeks to require congressional approval for the deployment of U.S. forces or military action against Iran. While the measure is largely symbolic because Trump is expected to veto it and supporters lack the votes to override a veto, it highlights growing concern in Congress over the scope of presidential war powers.
Republican Representatives Thomas Massie, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick and Tom Barrett broke ranks with the White House and voted in favor of the measure.
The vote comes amid continuing debate in Washington over U.S. involvement in the confrontation with Iran. Lawmakers from both parties have raised questions about the risks of a broader regional conflict and the need for congressional oversight of military operations.
At the same time, Trump has rejected reports that negotiations with Tehran have stalled. Writing on his Truth Social platform, he described media reports about a breakdown in talks as “false and misleading” and insisted that discussions between the United States and Iran had continued over the past several days.
Trump said he had urged Iran to reach an agreement, arguing that the long-running dispute between Washington and Tehran could not continue indefinitely.
The dispute over presidential powers comes as U.S.-Iran relations remain highly volatile following recent military clashes and a fragile ceasefire. While both sides have signaled support for diplomacy, deep disagreements remain over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security issues and sanctions.
International observers say the outcome of the talks could have significant implications for stability across the Middle East, where tensions involving Iran, Israel and U.S. allies continue to shape the regional security landscape.
