MSF condemns strike near south Lebanon hospital that killed four and wounded 127
Medical aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) condemned an Israeli strike near a hospital in southern Lebanon that killed at least four people and wounded 127 others, warning that repeated attacks are endangering healthcare services and civilians. According to Al Jazeera, the strike on Monday hit near Jabal Amel Hospital, causing extensive damage to the facility’s building and medical equipment. MSF said inpatient wards, the radiology department and the intensive care unit were among the sections most heavily damaged. “One wall of the operating theatre was severely damaged, leaving a large hole, and medical staff were forced to immediately relocate half of the remaining intensive care patients to ensure their safety,” the organization said. Omar Obeid, MSF’s project coordinator in southern Lebanon, said the attack reflected a broader failure to protect healthcare facilities during the conflict. “These repeated attacks demonstrate a serious failure to protect the health sector and underscore the urgent need to safeguard civilians, medical workers, healthcare facilities and continued access to life-saving care,” he said. The strike comes as fighting in southern Lebanon has intensified following the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has supported Iran during the confrontation, prompting expanded Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that military operations in southern Lebanon would continue under all circumstances, signaling that the campaign could expand further despite growing international concern. The conflict has placed increasing pressure on Lebanon’s already fragile healthcare system. Hospitals in southern regions have faced repeated disruptions, while aid organizations have warned that shortages of medical supplies, damaged infrastructure and the displacement of civilians are limiting access to treatment. The United Nations and humanitarian agencies have repeatedly called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect medical facilities. Rights groups say attacks that damage hospitals or interfere with healthcare delivery risk worsening the humanitarian situation for thousands of civilians caught in the conflict.
