Turkish man finds $21.8 billion in account as bank launches probe

A man living in eastern Turkey was left shocked after nearly one trillion Turkish lira ($21.8 billion) was reportedly deposited into his bank account from an unknown source, Turkish media reported. According to Turkish broadcaster NTV, Ahmad Jahangard Taqalu, an Azerbaijani citizen residing in the city of Van, discovered the massive balance after his bank card stopped working during a shopping trip. The reported transfer amounted to 999 billion, 999 million, 999 thousand, 999 lira and 99 kuruş, a sum that would have placed him among the world’s wealthiest individuals if it had been legitimate. Turkish media said the bank immediately froze the account after the transaction was detected and launched an investigation into the source of the funds. Authorities have not publicly identified where the money originated. “When I went to the bank, the employee called his supervisor, then the branch manager arrived. Everyone gathered around,” Taqalu was quoted as saying. “The money had appeared in the account, but it had already been blocked by financial crime investigators. Everyone found the situation unbelievable.” The incident has attracted widespread attention on Turkish social media, where users questioned how such a large transfer could pass through banking systems before being flagged.
