Iraq seizes $10M and 40 properties in Oil Ministry corruption case
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Investigative Judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court announced on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, that preliminary investigations into the detained suspect, Adnan Mohammad Mahmoud, have triggered sweeping legal actions. Mahmoud, who previously served as the Deputy Minister of Oil for Refining Affairs, is the focus of a major state-level crackdown alongside his associates, leading to the immediate seizure of substantial financial assets and premium real estate holdings linked to the case.
According to an official judicial statement, the preliminary asset-tracing operations have successfully frozen approximately 40 real estate properties distributed across the governorates of Baghdad, Salah al-Din, and Erbil. Beyond the seized land and buildings, judicial authorities confiscated liquid cash reserves estimated at $10,000,000 alongside 3 billion IQD. The raids also turned up physical luxury assets, including approximately 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry.
The Anti-Corruption Court noted that the initial raids uncovered a large cache of light and medium weaponry illegally stored at properties tied to the suspects. Judicial officials emphasized that the comprehensive investigation is actively expanding, with specialized investigators working to trace and expose every public official, corporate intermediary, or external entity connected to the illicit network.
The judicial update follows a confirmed security report from May 29, 2026, detailing the initial arrest of the former Director General of the North Refineries Company and Deputy Minister of Oil, Adnan Hamad Hammoud. The administrative downfall of the official, also referred to as al-Jumaili, began on May 3, 2026, when he was formally dismissed from his leadership role at the North Refineries Company by an official executive decree from the Prime Minister, who subsequently appointed Qusay Khalaf as his successor.
